Free SaferCar App From NHTSA
Safety is the number one concern when it comes to driving on Minnesota roads, but up until now it took time and effort to get the info you need to get the safest car possible. In an effort to make the processes more simple, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, or NHTSA, has released a new safety app for iPad Touches and iPhones called “SaferCar.”
Once you download the free app from iTunes, scan the VIN of your car with your phone, and you’ll have access to all sorts of information.
If you’re on the market for a new car, you can search safety ratings by make and model from your phone.
You’ll get recall information about your car as it’s released.
If something strange has been happening with your car, like cracks in the windshield appearing repeatedly in the same place, you can check if other customers have had the same problem.
This feature is especially helpful for parents with small children. When you request it, the app will give you directions to the nearest fire or police station which offers help in proper installation of car seats.
Education and Integration
Although it is currently only available for the iPad Touch and iPhone, an Android version is being developed, as well. In addition, the NHTSA has made the app available to programmers for integration to other apps through the use of an Application Programming Interface (API). They will also be opening online classes to teach people how to use the API.
Although a fair amount of what happens on the road is out of our control, it’s easier than ever to choose the best safety pick for your needs, pinpoint flaws in the car’s design, and ensure a safe ride for your children and other passengers.
