There are Disadvantages to Hybrid Cars

They’ve been touted as a great environmental breakthrough but if you’re considering buying a hybrid, it’s a good idea to have an idea of their advantages and disadvantages.  Hybrid cars are going down in price which means many people are hoping to go out and buy one. Although, it does sound good overall with fuel efficiency, it might not be the best for you. This is something that you have to step back and actually take a look at.

Disadvantages

There is a lot of talk going around about  hybrid cars and how well they work, but they do have disadvantages just like any other vehicle you choose to buy. Dealerships are not going to tell you these, though, because they want you to buy the car with the higher price tag. You have to take it upon yourself to go over both the disadvantages and advantages that come with them.

  • They get low fuel efficiency
  • They come with a high price tag
  • The cost of the replacement battery is high
  • The cost of the replacement parts is high

Hybrid or Normal?

Many drivers feel the disappointment of owning a hybrid car when they buy one and it is not as efficient on fuel as the dealership made it seem. Many believe they get around 50 to 60 miles per gallon, but in actuality they get far worse: around 30 miles per gallon! This is a letdown for those people that purchase the car for that reason. The Honda Civic Hybrid sells in the mid $20,000’s and gets close t0 40 miles per gallon; however, a regular Honda that is $18,000 gets a little over 30 miles per gallon. This is a large markup for the extra 5 miles per gallon or so. This means you will have to go for years in order to make up the difference.

Some of the Worst Hybrids

Always keep these disadvantages in mind before you decide to buy one of these hybrid cars, and that is not to say that all hybrids are bad since, some actually are worth the money you pay. You just need to know which ones are bad and which are the good ones. Here are some hybrids that have some of the lowest ratings since they get poor gas mileage and are expensive to purchase initially.

  • Chevy Tahoe Hybrid
  • Toyota Camry Hybrid
  • Honda Civic Hybrid
  • GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid
